A queue is a shape imposed on a room, and the room usually wins. Layouts fail because they were drawn as an abstract serpentine and then pushed into a space with doors, columns and cross-traffic in it.
Start with the approach, not the counter
People join a queue from wherever they entered the building, and they will take the shortest line to what looks like the end of it. If the entry point is not obvious from the approach, they will join in the middle, and no amount of signage fixes that reliably.
Walk the approach as a stranger before drawing anything. The entry has to be visible from where people actually arrive.
Aisle width is an accessibility requirement
Plan aisles wide enough for a wheelchair to pass and to turn at every corner of a serpentine. Turning space at the ends matters as much as the straight width, and it is the thing most improvised layouts get wrong.
Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by building type, so confirm what applies to you. What we can do is draw the layout to whatever widths you specify and flag corners that look tight.
Serpentines are not always right
A serpentine maximises people per square metre and is correct for high throughput with a predictable flow. In a low-volume space it makes a short queue feel like a process and can read as unwelcoming.
For lower volumes, a single guided line with a clear entry and a visible endpoint usually works better and uses fewer posts.
Leave the doors alone
A queue that reaches a doorway blocks it, and a queue that turns inside a doorway blocks it twice. Keep a clear zone at every entrance, exit and fire door, and design the line to overflow away from them rather than toward them.
This is the constraint that most often changes a drawing, and it is far cheaper to discover on paper.
Plan for the overflow, not the average
Layouts are usually drawn for the expected queue and then fail on the busiest day, when the line leaves the managed area entirely and wanders across a concourse.
Decide in advance where the overflow goes and put the posts for it in the kit, even if they stay in a store cupboard most of the year.
Signs belong on the posts
A sign on a wall is read once, at the start. A sign frame on a stanchion sits at eye level exactly where a decision is made, and it can be changed by a staff member in seconds.
Double-sided frames matter more than people expect: the message going in and the message coming out are rarely the same.
